Deer Management Assistance Program - DMAP
The Mountain Lake Conservancy is an active participant in the Virginia Game and Inland Fisheries DMAP herd regulation program. We find that this helps us maintain both a healthy deer herd and reduces over-population of what can become a problematic resource due to the lack of natural predators present in our environment.

Hunting at Mountain Lake
Hunting privileges are restricted to three specially designated areas of Conservancy property and are reserved to the following user groups:
- full-time Mountain Lake Hotel and Conservancy employees
We are now working closely with our local law enforcement officers and Virginia Game and Inland Fisheries to better regulate this resource. Increased patrols and new surveillance technologies have been invested in to help promote and maintain a safe and well managed environment to protect both our hunters, volunteers, employees and their families as well as to protect our resources.
If a hunter on a nearby property has wounded a deer that has strayed onto Conservancy property, the hunter must be accompanied by authorized Mountain Lake personel to locate the animal or face criminal trespassing charges.
