Update 4.29.09

We have just purchased 9 INNOVA Discatcher Pro baskets for our new Disc Golf course. Thanks to the help of local businesses, we were able to purchase baskets through their sponsorships. Mike Collini, an avid disc golfer, headed the whole project up and we appreciate his support and enthusiasm to bring an exciting new recreational opportunity to Mountain Lake. We will be holding a Volunteer Day on Saturday, May 2 to assemble and install the 9 baskets. If you are interested in participating, please call 540.626.7121 x444. Once these 9 holes are installed, we will continue to phase 2 and purchase 9 more baskets so we will eventually have an 18 hole golf course!

Running dry: Mountain Lake is doing its cyclical disappearing act
By Tonia Moxley - Roanoke Times

7.28.08

Lake Levels
The lake is rapidly declining now. Over the weekend divers recorded a maximum depth of just 44 feet and we are now over 51 feet down from full pond. An audacious project to stuff sandbags into the eighteen or so known holes in the bottom were cancelled due to zero visibility just 15 feet beneath the surface. Everyone here is disappointed, but we all must accept that some things are beyond our control. Remember, when Salt Pond Mountain was first discovered and surveyed in 1751, it was noted that there was only a small lake, and a nice meadow.

The Mountain Lake Conservancy is currently working on a "Trail Access Program" to open up our multi-use trails to the public on a year-round basis. Users will be able to access the trails from a parking lot designated specifically for trail use. Year round passes will be sold at various outdoor outfitters in the area. Day-use will also be permitted with a small fee. Trails are now available for cross-country skiing, mountain biking and hiking.
